A homeowner had just redesigned an open plan apartment and asked Dr Aneil Kkhare where the sofa and TV should be placed in the apartment in accordance with the Vastu. The difficulty lay in the fact that not only are the rooms in modern apartments often integrated into a single space, but the accommodation layout varies from one to another, and so do the furniture-placement diagrams, which are thus not generic and cannot be applied without first understanding the layout of the room.
Dr Aneil Kkhare: Traditional Vastu living room direction is given preference with reference to the direction and the entire house plan. So, Dr Aneil Kkhare assesses the space as a whole and not a single direction.
Dr Aneil Kkhare: Sofa arrangement based on Vastu is based on the directions, entrances, windows and available circulation space of the room. Before recommending a furniture arrangement, Dr Aneil Kkhare takes into account the traditional principles and comfort.
Dr Aneil Kkhare: Television placement in Vastu should be taken into consideration in the direction and actual design of the living room. Dr Aneil Kkhare also ensures that a recommendation is not unrealistic with respect to electrical connections, viewing angle and everyday usage.
According to the traditional selection of the living-room colours in Vastu, the colours are selected based on direction, atmosphere and overall property. Dr Aneil Kkhare doesn't want to say that a certain colour is right for all homes.
Dr Aneil Kkhare: If the living room is open plan, the principles of Vastu can be taken into consideration by looking at the functional areas of the space. Dr Aneil Kkhare evaluates seating and dining, entrances, etc based on the actual layout and not on the need for separate enclosed rooms.
Dr Aneil Kkhare explains the Vastu interpretation in the context of the traditional apartments, villas and living spaces. Dr Aneil Kkhare emphasises the existing space, so that recommendations can be understood and practical in the house.
